A key strategy in effective apologetics is building a cumulative case—using multiple lines of evidence that reinforce one another while remaining capable of standing on their own. Together, they form a strong overall case. But each individual point should also be clear and compelling enough to challenge an opposing argument when considered on its own.
Ready Responses are designed with this approach in mind. Each response is a concise, memorable Truth Bullet—a key fact, question, or line of reasoning you can introduce into a conversation. You don’t need to deliver an entire argument at once. Sometimes one well-placed truth is enough to challenge an assumption, expose a weakness, or give someone a reason to reconsider what they believe.
Skeptics often raise difficult questions about creation, the universe, God, and the Bible. Ready Responses gives you concise answers, memorable Truth Bullets, key Scriptures or Quotes to help you understand the issue and explain what you believe in your own words.
Purpose: You don’t need to memorize an argument. Learn the key ideas well enough to explain them in your own words.
God Himself Declared Jesus to Be His Divine Son
Response
The identity of Jesus is not determined by human opinion, popular culture, or religious tradition.
The Bible records something far more significant: God the Father Himself identified Jesus as His beloved Son.
Consider these extraordinary declarations:
- At Jesus’ baptism: God spoke from heaven, identifying Jesus as His beloved Son (Matthew 3:16–17).
- At the Transfiguration: God again identified Jesus as His Son and commanded the disciples to listen to Him (Matthew 17:5).
- Jesus is the exact representation of God: Hebrews describes the Son as the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of His nature (Hebrews 1:1–3).
- Jesus is exalted above all: God bestowed upon Jesus the name above every name, before whom every knee will bow (Philippians 2:9–11).
- Jesus’ resurrection vindicated His identity: Paul connects the resurrection to Jesus being declared the Son of God in power (Romans 1:3–4).
These declarations go far beyond describing a gifted teacher, prophet, or spiritual leader.
God identifies Jesus as His Son, the revelation of His own nature, and the rightful Lord over all creation.
When God commands people to listen to Jesus, He is not simply recommending another religious philosopher.
He is directing mankind to His Son.
Truth Bullet
- Jesus’ identity is not established by human opinion. God Himself identifies Jesus as His Son and commands mankind to listen to Him.
Helpful Scripture — Matthew 17:5 (ESV)
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
Helpful Scripture — Hebrews 1:3 (ESV)
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.”
Challenge Question: If God Himself repeatedly identified Jesus as His Son, on what basis can we dismiss Him as merely another religious teacher?
Jesus Himself Claimed to Be Far More Than a Teacher
Response:
Many people are comfortable describing Jesus as a great moral teacher while rejecting the idea that He was God.
But that position overlooks what Jesus actually said about Himself.
Jesus did not merely claim to know the truth about God. He claimed an identity and authority belonging to God.
Consider His extraordinary claims:
- He claimed eternal existence: Jesus declared that He existed before Abraham (John 8:58–59).
- He claimed authority to forgive sins: Religious leaders accused Him of blasphemy because forgiveness ultimately belongs to God (Mark 2:5–12).
- He claimed unity with the Father: Jesus declared that He and the Father were one (John 10:30–33).
- He claimed to be the only way to God: Jesus identified Himself as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
- He claimed authority over judgment: Jesus declared that the Father had entrusted judgment to the Son (John 5:22–23).
- He accepted worship: His disciples worshiped Him and acknowledged Him as the Son of God (Matthew 14:33).
These are not the ordinary claims of a moral teacher.
They are extraordinary declarations concerning Jesus’ identity, authority, and relationship with God.
This is the foundation of C. S. Lewis’ famous argument.
If Jesus knowingly made false claims about His divine identity, He was a liar.
If He sincerely believed false claims of such magnitude, He was profoundly mistaken.
But if His claims were true, then He was exactly who He said He was: the Lord.
Lewis challenged the notion that Jesus could be admired as a great moral teacher while His claims to divinity were dismissed.
“I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” A man who was mereley a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, or you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet a dn call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
C.S Lewis—Mere Christianity
The central issue is whether Jesus was telling the truth about Himself.
Truth Bullet
- Jesus did not leave us with the option of treating Him as merely another great teacher. His claims to divine authority demand that we determine whether He was telling the truth.
Helpful Scripture — John 8:58 (ESV)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Helpful Scripture — John 14:6 (ESV)
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
Challenge Question: If Jesus claimed eternal existence, the authority to forgive sins, and equality with God, how can we reasonably regard Him as a great moral teacher if those extraordinary claims were lies?
Scripture Declares Jesus to Be the Wisdom and Power of God
Response
The Bible does not simply describe Jesus as someone who possessed extraordinary wisdom or performed remarkable miracles.
It makes a much greater claim.
Jesus is the very wisdom and power of God revealed to mankind.
Consider how the New Testament describes Him:
- The wisdom of God: Paul identifies Christ as God’s wisdom and power (1 Corinthians 1:24).
- The source of divine knowledge: All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ (Colossians 2:2–3).
- The Creator of all things: Everything was created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:15–17).
- The sustainer of creation: All things hold together in Him (Colossians 1:17).
- The revelation of God’s nature: Jesus is described as the exact imprint of God’s nature (Hebrews 1:3).
- God revealed in human flesh: John’s Gospel identifies the eternal Word as God and declares that the Word became flesh (John 1:1, 14).
These descriptions distinguish Jesus from every ordinary prophet, philosopher, and religious teacher.
A teacher may explain wisdom.
Jesus is identified as the wisdom of God.
A prophet may proclaim God’s power.
Jesus is identified as the power of God.
A religious leader may point people toward the Creator.
Jesus is identified as the One through whom creation came into existence.
This also has enormous implications for the trustworthiness of Christianity.
If the New Testament’s central claims about Jesus are false, then its message about His identity and salvation is fundamentally mistaken.
But if those claims are true, Jesus is not simply someone whose teachings deserve consideration.
He is the divine Lord whose words carry ultimate authority.
Truth Bullet
- The Bible does not merely describe Jesus as a wise and powerful teacher. It identifies Him as God’s wisdom and power, the Creator and sustainer of all things.
Helpful Scripture — 1 Corinthians 1:24 (ESV)
“Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”
Helpful Scripture — Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
Challenge Question: If Scripture identifies Jesus as the Creator, the sustainer of all things, and the wisdom and power of God, how can He be reduced to an ordinary religious teacher?
Rejecting Jesus’ Divine Identity Is a Decision With Eternal Consequences
Response:
People hold many different opinions about Jesus.
Some call Him a prophet.
Others admire Him as a moral philosopher, religious reformer, or inspiring example of love and compassion.
But according to Scripture, the question of Jesus’ identity is not merely an interesting theological debate.
It is a decision with eternal consequences.
Consider what the Bible teaches:
- Rejecting the Son means rejecting the Father: Scripture declares that those who deny the Son do not have the Father (1 John 2:23).
- Rejecting God’s testimony questions His truthfulness: John warns that unbelief rejects God’s testimony concerning His Son (1 John 5:10).
- Dishonoring Jesus dishonors God: Jesus taught that those who fail to honor the Son fail to honor the Father who sent Him (John 5:23).
- Belief in the Son is connected to eternal life: John contrasts believing in Jesus with rejecting Him (John 3:36).
- Jesus is the only way to the Father: Jesus declared that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).
These statements reveal why Christianity treats the identity of Jesus as its central question.
A person’s opinion does not determine whether Jesus is divine.
Truth is not established by popularity, personal preference, or cultural acceptance.
The question is whether the evidence supports what Jesus and Scripture claim about His identity.
Consider how carefully people investigate ordinary matters.
We verify the credentials of doctors, examine the qualifications of professionals, and investigate the claims of people we are considering trusting.
Yet many people dismiss Jesus’ identity without seriously examining His teachings, miracles, fulfilled prophecies, crucifixion, or reported resurrection.
If the claims of Jesus are true, no question deserves more careful consideration.
Truth Bullet
- Jesus’ identity is not a matter of personal preference. If He truly is the Son of God, accepting or rejecting Him is the most consequential decision a person can make.
Helpful Scripture — 1 John 2:23 (ESV)
“No one who denies the Son has the Father.”
Helpful Scripture — John 3:36 (ESV)
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Challenge Question: If we carefully investigate the qualifications of people we trust with our health, finances, and safety, shouldn’t we investigate even more carefully the claims of Jesus Christ, whose promises concern eternity?
