A key strategy in effective apologetics is building a cumulative case—using multiple lines of evidence that reinforce one another while remaining capable of standing on their own. Together, they form a strong overall case. But each individual point should also be clear and compelling enough to challenge an opposing argument when considered on its own.
Ready Responses are designed with this approach in mind. Each response is a concise, memorable Truth Bullet—a key fact, question, or line of reasoning you can introduce into a conversation. You don’t need to deliver an entire argument at once. Sometimes one well-placed truth is enough to challenge an assumption, expose a weakness, or give someone a reason to reconsider what they believe.
Skeptics often raise difficult questions about creation, the universe, God, and the Bible. Ready Responses gives you concise answers, memorable Truth Bullets, key Scriptures or Quotes to help you understand the issue and explain what you believe in your own words.
Purpose: You don’t need to memorize an argument. Learn the key ideas well enough to explain them in your own words.
God Is Not Indifferent to Evil
Response
One of the most common assumptions among skeptics is that God’s apparent silence in the face of evil demonstrates His indifference.
But the Bible presents an entirely different picture.
From Genesis to Revelation, God repeatedly condemns wickedness, injustice, cruelty, oppression, and rebellion against His moral law.
Consider what Scripture reveals about God’s attitude toward evil:
- God hates wickedness. Evil is contrary to His perfectly holy character.
- God sees every injustice. No crime, act of cruelty, or hidden wrongdoing escapes His attention.
- God knows every motive. Unlike human judges, He possesses complete knowledge of the human heart.
- God remembers every deed. Even when earthly courts fail, divine justice does not forget.
- God promises accountability. Every person will ultimately answer to Him.
Human beings frequently judge wrongdoing with incomplete evidence, limited knowledge, and personal biases.
God possesses none of these limitations.
He sees every action, knows every intention, and understands the full consequences of every evil deed.
The fact that God has not yet punished every act of wickedness does not mean He has overlooked it.
Truth Bullet
– God’s delay in judging evil is not evidence of indifference. He sees every injustice, knows every motive, and promises that no wicked deed will escape His judgment.
Helpful Scripture
“For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”
Ecclesiastes 12:14
Challenge Question: If human courts recognize the importance of investigating and judging wrongdoing, why would we assume that an all-knowing and perfectly righteous God is less concerned about bringing evil to justice?
God Is Already Actively Restraining and Judging Evil
Response
Skeptics frequently ask why God does nothing about evil.
But this objection overlooks the many ways Scripture describes God as actively confronting and restraining wickedness.
God is not merely waiting until the end of history to address evil. He has established numerous means through which wrongdoing is confronted and restrained in the present.
Consider several examples:
- Human conscience: God has given human beings an awareness of moral right and wrong.
- Civil government: God has established governing authorities with responsibility for maintaining justice and punishing wrongdoing.
- The Holy Spirit: God’s Spirit convicts people concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment.
- Consequences of wrongdoing: Sin frequently produces destructive consequences that expose its nature.
- Divine discipline: God corrects His children to develop holiness and righteousness.
- Direct intervention: Scripture records occasions when God personally intervened to judge wickedness.
- Divine restraint: God limits the expression of evil so that His purposes can continue.
Consider how different the world might be without conscience, laws, courts, moral accountability, and the restraining influence of God’s truth.
The existence of evil does not mean that evil is operating without restraint.
In fact, Christianity teaches that God’s continued involvement prevents evil from reaching the full extent of its destructive potential.
Truth Bullet
– God is not passively observing evil. He actively restrains and confronts wickedness through conscience, government, the Holy Spirit, consequences, discipline, and divine judgment.
Helpful Scripture
The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong.
Romans 13:4
Challenge Question: If God has already established conscience, moral law, government, and other means of restraining wrongdoing, is it accurate to claim that He is doing nothing about evil?
God Has Promised to Judge and Eradicate Evil Forever
Response
Perhaps the most important Christian response to the problem of evil is that God has promised evil will not continue forever.
The Bible teaches that a day is coming when every injustice will be exposed, every wrongdoer will face divine judgment, and evil will be permanently removed from God’s eternal kingdom.
Consider the significance of this promise.
Throughout human history, countless individuals have committed terrible crimes and escaped earthly punishment.
Dictators have murdered millions. Criminals have exploited the innocent. Corrupt leaders have abused their authority. Victims have died without ever seeing justice.
But Christianity teaches that earthly death does not place a wrongdoer beyond God’s jurisdiction.
No criminal can hide from an all-knowing Judge.
No injustice can be forgotten by an eternal God.
And no wicked deed can escape the final judgment of a perfectly righteous Creator.
Scripture describes several promises concerning evil’s ultimate defeat:
- Every deed will be judged. Nothing remains hidden from God.
- The wicked will face accountability. Earthly power and influence provide no protection from divine justice.
- Satan will be defeated. The ultimate adversary of God and His people will face final judgment.
- Death will be abolished. The final enemy will be destroyed.
- Creation will be renewed. God will establish a new heaven and new earth.
- Suffering will end. Pain, mourning, and death will no longer exist among God’s redeemed people.
God’s patience should not be confused with indifference.
According to 2 Peter 3:9, His delay reflects His patience toward sinners and His desire that people repent.
The God who promises to judge evil is also the God who offers forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ.
Truth Bullet
– Evil is living on borrowed time. God has promised that every injustice will be judged, every wrongdoer held accountable, and evil permanently eradicated from His eternal kingdom.
Helpful Scripture
I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom
2 Timothy 4:1
Challenge Question: If God has promised to judge every act of wickedness and permanently eliminate evil, is the present delay in judgment evidence of His indifference—or an opportunity for mankind to repent before that judgment arrives?
