A key strategy in effective apologetics is building a cumulative case—using multiple lines of evidence that reinforce one another while remaining capable of standing on their own. Together, they form a strong overall case. But each individual point should also be clear and compelling enough to challenge an opposing argument when considered on its own.
Ready Responses are designed with this approach in mind. Each response is a concise, memorable Truth Bullet—a key fact, question, or line of reasoning you can introduce into a conversation. You don’t need to deliver an entire argument at once. Sometimes one well-placed truth is enough to challenge an assumption, expose a weakness, or give someone a reason to reconsider what they believe.
Skeptics often raise difficult questions about creation, the universe, God, and the Bible. Ready Responses gives you concise answers, memorable Truth Bullets, key Scriptures or Quotes to help you understand the issue and explain what you believe in your own words.
Purpose: You don’t need to memorize an argument. Learn the key ideas well enough to explain them in your own words.
If the universe had a beginning, what caused it?
Response
One of the simplest arguments for God’s existence begins with the Law of Causation:
Whatever begins to exist must have a cause of its beginning.
The universe did not cause itself. For something to create itself, it would have to exist before it existed, which is logically impossible.
Modern cosmology also points to a universe that had a beginning. The universe is expanding, and when that expansion is traced backward, it points toward an initial beginning of space, time, matter, and energy.
That leads to a simple question:
If the universe began to exist, what caused it?
Whatever caused the universe cannot ultimately be something within the universe. The cause must transcend the physical universe it brought into existence.
Truth Bullet
- A universe with a beginning requires a cause beyond the universe.
There is no beginning without a “beginner!”
Helpful Memory Verse
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
Challenge Question: If the universe cannot create itself, and it has not existed forever, what caused it to begin?
Where did the original matter and energy come from?
Response
The ancient philosophical principle ex nihilo nihil fit expresses the problem simply:
Out of nothing, nothing comes.
Nothing has no matter, no energy, no properties, no laws, and no causal power. Nothing cannot produce anything, expecially everything!
Truth Bullet
Explaining what matter did is not the same as explaining where matter came from.
Helpful Quote
It is absurd for the evolutionist to complain that it is unthinkable for God to make everything out of nothing, and then pretend that it is more thinkable that nothing should turn itself into everything.
G.K Chesterton
Challenge Question: If all physical reality had a beginning, where did the original matter and energy come from before there was a physical universe to produce them?
Who created God?
Response:
This question misunderstands the argument.
The Law of Causation does not say:
Everything must have a cause.
It says:
Everything that begins to exist must have a cause.
Christianity does not claim that God began to exist. God is understood as eternal and uncaused.
The universe, by contrast, consists of space, time, matter, and energy and points toward a beginning. Therefore its ultimate cause cannot itself depend upon the physical universe for its existence.
As your ThinkCube summarizes the argument, the First Cause would need to be eternal, immaterial, powerful, and intelligent.
Truth Bullet
- God doesn’t need a creator because He never began to exist. And because the universe cannot be eternal, it requires an eternal source beyond itself to bring it into existence.
Helpful Scripture
From everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Psalm 90:2
Challenge Question: If God is eternal and never began to exist, why would the Law of Causation require Him to have a creator?
